I’ve added some images of common failures and issues in asphalt surfaces. I then provided a link to the corresponding service page on our website. Consider this your one stop shop for all things asphalt maintenance!

Asphalt Oxidation
Asphalt oxidation is a chemical process, similar to iron rusting, that causes the asphalt to break apart and degrade over time.
Sealcoating
The largest benefit of sealcoating is to stop the oxidation process. Sealcoat is in itself a new layer of asphalt, so by sealing on a regular 3-5 year cycle, you save the original asphalt surface.

Alligator Cracking
This type of failure consists of asphalt fracturing dramatically in all directions. It is assocatied with a total structural failure of the pavement. Hover over this card to see our solution!
Remove and Replace
Unfortunately, alligator cracking is a sign that the sub base of your pavement has been compromised. The only true solution is to cut out the area, compress the base course and re-lay asphalt. Click this Link Below!

Longitudinal Cracking
Longitudinal cracks are the ones that form along the direction of the pavement surface, usually along the centerline. This can be a reflection of poor joint construction during paving.
Crack Repair
This type of issue has an easy and viable long term solutions. Because these are usually not thermal cracks, which will expand and contract with temperature, routing is not always necessary.

Block Cracking
Block cracking is a surface failure in AC pavement. it appears as large cracks that aline themselves in 'blocks'.
Crack Repair
Block cracking is a sign of excessive freeze/thaw, inadequate binder in the original mix or an aged pavement surface. Because this is not a structural failure, it is easily fixed by crack filling and crack repair.

Edge Cracking
Edge cracking occurs on the perimeter of an asphalt surface and is a sign of poor compaction during placement.
Crack Repair/Shoulder Stabilization
In order to address this issue correctly, you will have to determine just how poor the sub base of the shoulder is. A proper fix start with crack repair and may include shoulder stabilization.

Transverse Cracking
Transverse cracks run perpendicular to the centerline of a road. These are usually reflective cracks, which mimic whats going on below the HMA.
Crack Repair (Routing if Necessary)
Transverse cracks are a type of thermal cracking and expand/contract with temperature swings. Some cases of transverse cracking may require routing to ensure a proper repair.
